Emor is pleased to announce the second issue of Fragments, on the topic of Israel: Democracy, Race, Ethnicity, and More. Issue 2 will be published on November 1, 2023, the anniversary of the election of the current Israeli government — Israel’s most right-wing, religious, and racist government ever.
We invite contributors to submit responses to the following guiding questions:
Today, Israel is erupting in protests for democracy that have drawn hundreds of thousands of people to the street for months on end. But what does democracy even mean in Israel (and what does it mean in the occupied Palestinian territories)? How do the overlapping categories of race, ethnicity, nationality and class shape how one might think about democracy in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories? How do these categories shape American discourse about Israel? And what can Jewish texts, history, literature, and other wisdom teach about navigating these intersecting dynamics of access and belonging?
Please note: You do not have to be a rabbi or cantor to submit; our first issue of “Fragments” included writing and artwork from playwrights, lawyers, freelance writers, poets, photographers, academics, and more.
Essays:
- Submit only pitches, not complete essays.
- Pitches should succinctly describe (3 sentences) the essay you hope to write, including a clear thesis statement and intended length. The form will also ask you to link to or attach a sample of your writing for a popular audience.
- Pitches are due by May 31. Emor staff will respond with a yes or no by June 9, and complete essay drafts are due on August 18.
- Pay scale:
- $400 for articles of approximately 1000 words
- $800 for articles of approximately 2000 words
Poetry, visual art, music, other compositions
- Please submit completed works.
- Deadline for submission is June 8, 2023.
- Pay scale:
- Photography: $100 per photograph. We are also seeking submissions for the cover photo.
- All other works: $300 per composition
Contributions should reflect the values laid out in T’ruah’s overall position on Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, though need not hew precisely to T’ruah policies and statements.
All submissions to Fragments will be considered without regard to previous or standing relationship to T’ruah or Emor. If accepted for publication, contributions from T’ruah board members or family of T’ruah staff will be handled in accordance with T’ruah’s anti-nepotism policies, which may involve not being paid. Contributors under the age of 18 will be required to sign a parental consent form provided by Emor if their submission is accepted.
We are actively seeking to build a diverse and inclusive publication with a wide range of contributors, backgrounds, and perspectives. Fragments does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, personal appearance, family responsibility, political affiliation or any other status protected by applicable law. Women, transgender people, veterans, and people of color are encouraged to submit pitches.
Systemic inequities in Jewish communities have caused many women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people to question if their perspectives are Jewish “enough.” Emor values and endeavors to lift up intersectionality and a diverse array of perspectives that represents the fullness of our communities.
